Lozells & Handsworth
Lozells Jobs Fair - Saturday 13 March 2010 between 11:00am and 3:00pm
The focus of activity in this area has been on Lozells and East Handsworth, working
in partnership with Birmingham City Council and Midland Heart Housing Group.
- The Northern part of the area is characterised by large, Victorian properties,
that at one time formed an affluent part of the city.
- The Southern zone is formed of small terraced Victorian and Georgian property.
The polar character of the zones has resulted in differing interventions set within
appropriate Masterplans:
South Lozells
This work has resulted in the improvement of the sustainable stock in the area,
with the removal of a series of the small, unpopular Victorian properties. This
removal is resulting in a range of developable sites that will be taken to market
over the next three years. Alongside this, there are a series of Eco and environmental
improvements planned for the area, with a focus on the sustainable stock and improving
community cohesion.
North Lozells
The large properties found in this area have, in the past, been extensively converted
into housing of multiple occupation (HMO’s). The masterplanning that has now been
completed has identified that there is a demand for larger family homes, for the
multi-generational families that typically occupy the area. The HMO’s are therefore
being de-converted as part of the interventions in the area. Alongside this, there
are a series of neighbourhoods that are being re-structured by Midland Heart (a
major landlord in the area.). This will ultimately lead to redevelopment and the
creation of a thriving neighbourhood. Urban Living has also invested in a series
of community safety projects, to address the incidence of crime that is experienced
in the area and to support residents.
