Overview.

The programme

The programmes will see radical and sustained action to replace obsolete housing with modern sustainable accommodation, through demolition, refurbishment and new building.

The housing market within the Urban Living area is at risk of failing, and Urban Living is working with partners to create stable, attractive and diverse neighbourhoods and communities. This also means dealing with the many social, community and economic issues that affect the sustainability of neighbourhoods such as education, employment, community safety, health and creating well designed, clean and attractive environments that people take pride in.

Programme to 2006

  • Clearance and demolition of 507 homes;
  • Refurbishment of over 1600 homes;
  • Construction of 154 new homes;
  • 8,550 homes being subject to additional management measures designed to overcome low demand.

Long-term programme

The first Prospectus submitted to the Department of Communities and Local Government (DCLG) in March 2004 set out what Urban Living intended to achieve over a period of 15 years. It said it would support and facilitate:

  • Construction of approximately 12,000 homes
  • Refurbishment of approximately 15,000 homes
  • Clearance and demolition of approximately 3,500 properties
  • Environmental works to approximately 12,800 homes
