Pathfinder area.

The area we cover

The area covered by the Pathfinder extends from the edge of Birmingham city centre in a northwesterly direction over the boundary with adjoining Sandwell MBC, specifically - Aston, Newtown, Lozells, Winson Green, Handsworth, Smethwick, West Bromwich and Greets Green.

It is a typical inner-city area containing 60,000 dwellings largely of older terraced housing and local authority accommodation intermixed with traditional, often derelict or underused industrial areas. High levels of deprivation are evident throughout.

Population

The pathfinder has a diverse black and minority ethnic population, which makes up more than 65% of the 150,000 total (source: 2001 Census). About 6% are recent asylum seekers.

Other initiatives in the pathfinder area

The area is largely located within the South Black Country West Birmingham Regeneration Zone and in its boundary includes:

  • Two New Deal for Communities programmes - Greets Green and Aston Pride.
  • NW Birmingham Corridors of Regeneration SRB6.
  • RegenCO - the Sandwell Urban Regeneration Company.
  • The former Smethwick Regeneration Partnership.
  • Manchester Salford.

Other Pathfinder characteristics:
